Creating a Matrix from scratch
To create a Custom Matrix, navigate to the Matrix page (Security Selection > Matrix) and select Create New Matrix in the top right corner of the page
In the popup window that appears, you will then configure your Matrix's settings.
There are some things you may want to note about the options in this window:
- Scale- This determines the box size used in the Relative Strength charts that make up your Matrix. The default is 3.25%, which tends to work for most matrices but may need to be adjusted based on your universe.
- Highlight Data- within your Matrix, changes that have occurred within a certain timeframe will be indicated with arrows as shown below. The default value is one week, but this section allows you to define the lookback period used.
- Update Frequency- the value chosen here will impact your ability to set alerts to monitor this Matrix on an ongoing basis or to use this Matrix in a Custom Model
- Enter Symbols- Once you type in or copy/paste a list of securities into this box, you must click Add for them to be included in the Matrix. Matrices can include up to 100 tickers if your subscription does not include Model Builder and up to 200 tickers if your subscription does include Model Builder.
- Default Symbols- within Matrix Preferences you can set default symbols to be included in all of your Custom Matrices. This is frequently used to include benchmarks as shown here.
- Skip Summaries- this option allows you to view your Matrix faster initially by skipping the creation of Matrix history. However, this will hinder your ability to use this Matrix in a Custom Model and to analyze the Matrix's historical rankings
If you want to use your Custom Matrix as the basis for a Custom Model, there are three requirements that must be satisfied. 1) All securities within the Matrix must be denominated in the same currency. 2) The Matrix's Evaluation Frequency must be set to Daily. 3) The "Skip Summaries" checkbox must be left unchecked.
Creating a Matrix from an existing Portfolio
Creating a Matrix from your portfolio is really simple and can help you get the most out of the NDW platform by allowing you to apply our Relative Strength methodology to a universe of your choosing.
To create a Matrix from your portfolio, select Create from the Matrix on the Portfolios homepage.
After hitting Create the next screen allows you to set the parameters for your Matrix.
If you want to use this Matrix as the basis for a Custom Model, you need to make sure the Update Frequency is set to Daily and the checkbox next to Skip Summaries is left unchecked.
Linking your Matrix to your portfolio will update the universe of the Matrix if a change is made to the portfolio and vice versa. This means you do not have to make changes in both places if you want to add or remove any securities from the universe. Additionally, this will allow you to show the Matrix rankings within the linked portfolio.
Creating a Matrix with the "Send to..." Shuttle
You can also create a Custom Matrix from a list of securities elsewhere on the platform using the Send to... feature. The below example is from the Security Screener, but this feature is resident throughout the NDW platform.
On the pop up window that appears after you click the Send to... button, select Matrix and Create New then set your Matrix's name, scale, and update frequency and hit Save.
If you want to use this Matrix as the basis for a Custom Model, make sure the Update Frequency is set to Daily or simply check the "Check for Matrix Modeler Compatibility" checkbox.
